The assembly of studs and rivets could seem to the less experienced very difficult: someone could be scared to the point to decide not to go ahed.
Don't panic: take a look at our tutorial on how to assemble studs with rivets and will clarify all your doubts!
Studs can be equipped with different fixing systems:
- Studs with wings: these accessories are fixed thanks to the "wings" (made in a flexible metal) that must be folded on themselves once passed into the fabric;
- Studs with screw: these studs are fixed by screwing the appropriate screw on the head of the stud, internally equipped with the special thread.
- Studs with rivet: the studs with rivet are fixed to the fabric/leather through a male rivet, with a pinched shape that is pressed inside the stud (or the head of the rivet, if this is the accessory).
The easiest kind of stud to assembly is for use the one with wings: it does not require special tools (except a punch to pierce the fabric or leather). The process of assembling studs with screws is similar (all of us have a set of screwdrivers at home) and reversible. Differently, studs with rivet require some specific tools for its assembly.
The studs with rivets are certainly the most widespread and adopted accessories. If you are a "serial" diy, our advice is to evaluate the buying of this fastening system, although at the beginning it requires to equip itself with some extra equipment.
What are the advantages of studs with rivets? This type of stud can be used on any type of garment and accessory: it is lighter (the rivet weighs infinitely less than a screw) has an entirely reduced thickness (and therefore does not risk compromising the comfort of footwear and clothes). Last but not least, a stud set with rivet is more "firm": with time it does not lose its original position.
The assembly of the studs with rivets
Some tools are needed to assemble studs with rivets. Let's see them together:
- Press: the press allows you to apply good force with a lever (without any effort). It is a tool that is necessary when you want to assemble automatic buttons, rivets, eyelets, sail eyelets. If you want a versatile press we suggest you choose the no. 4, with a good width. This tool helps you to assemble even particularly flat and thin accessories.
- Dies: steel tool, with a cutting profile that reproduces a certain shape, for the blanking of leather or fabric. You will have to choose the die according to the diameter of the studs to be applied. It will ensure neat cuts without damage even to the most difficult materials to cut, without any fraying.
- Press Punch: the punch is the tool that physically couples the two components of the boss (head and rivet). Its shape follows that of the head of the punch so as not to damage it during assembly. Together with the punch, a base (also known as a compass) is almost always provided on which to position the rivet, perfectly centered.
In this video you can quickly and intuitively see the assembly phases of the studs with rivets. In particular, this video illustrates the assembly of a stud with a cone tip on the skin, using the tools you can find on our store.
The assembly is fast and immediate: it does not require special skills, but the simple execution of fast and mechanical operations. Do not stop your creative vein!
