On May 13rd 1958, George De Mestral, a Swiss engineer and inventor, registered the trademark of his best invention for the global market. A special hook-and-loop closure system made up of two pieces of fabric, one containing thousands of tiny threads and the other thousands of tiny hooks.
The discovery derived from the engineer's observation during a walk in the woods with his dog: De Mestral noticed that small balls with a particular shape remained attached to the animal's fur, which required a great deal of effort to detach them one by one.
He discovered that those balls - alpine thistle fruits - had tiny elastic hooks that got caught in the dog's hair, creating a really tenacious weave. Hence the intuition: with the collaboration of a Nylon manufacturer, he created the VELCRO® Brand hook-and-loop closure, now used in various products and sectors. VELCRO® Brand tapes are in fact used for shoes, bags, accessories, and clothing products, but also in the most unthinkable industrial sectors: orthopedics, automotive, upholstery, logistics up to the futuristic aerospace world.
All VELCRO® Brand products ensure fantastic closing and opening performances, combining characteristics of great importance (adhesive capacity, stitching, resistance to stress and flammability) with a colorful and pleasant look, which adapts to every circumstance and need.
